here's a good example of how to define your characters: poses with different angles, face expressions, emphasize on the details like hair, clothes..
i like the way she brainstorm the characters personality on this one. she drew 9 types of different themes for the same characters! 
this icons reminds me of our DF when we need to stylize the objects for our project.. here are stylizations of a single pepper! splendid, isn't it.. each of them have their very own unique characters..
